Cañacao Bay

Cañacao Bay is a small bay located within the larger Manila Bay in Luzon island in the Philippines.

It is located along the northeastern end of the Cavite Peninsula and Cavite City, in the Province of Cavite.

The bay is a good anchorage and it is bordered to the north by the Danilo Atienza Air Base of the Philippine Air Force and by the Naval Base Cavite of the Philippine Navy to the south. Both military bases previously were comprised by the Naval Station Sangley Point of the United States.

The Cavite City Hall is on the south side of the bay, with a pier for public ferry service before to Metro Manila.

The shore of the bay near the former Cavite Royal Arsenal was where the province's patron saint, an icon known as Our Lady of Solitude of Porta Vaga, was found during the Spanish colonial period following a Marian apparition.

The history of the city dates back to the galleon trade. Our Lady of Solitude of Porta Vaga is also found in the waters but current high officials are so keen of turning and reclaiming our historical city to an airport tripling the city size which will destroy its original unique form rather than embracing the bays and body of water around which was the original treasure.

Cavite City : 16th Century Simborio - The Santa Monica Church Belfry

Located in Magallanes Street , the Santa Monica Church Belfry is the sole surviving part of one of the numerous Spanish era churches in Cavite City. Santa Monica Church which was under the Recollects was built sometime in the early years of the 17th century. During the 17th century, the port city experienced economic and religious success. That is why various church orders built different churches around the city. However, none of these churches remained intact due to the war that took place.

This is how the entire church looks like before the bombing in the entire city.

This is a drone video of the current look of the simborio that sadly almost the entire population of the city has either forgotten and the young generation is not no longer aware of how much is its real value.

El Varadero Civil de Cañacao En Cavite (Old Spanish Slipway)

In 1884, the Spaniards approved the establishment of El Varadero de Manila or Fernandez Shipyard (the vacant lot in front of the present 15th Strike Wing, PAF Headquarters) which served Sangley Point as its western boundary. El Varadero de Manila acquired the area from a British company which was granted a 99-year decree. It was inaugurated in 1885.

When the Americans came in 1898, the facilities at Sangley Point was taken over by the U.S. Naval Expeditionary Forces under the command of Commodore George Dewey.

Below are photos of former employees in the varadero

Corregidor National Shrine

Derived its name from Corregimiento or municipal district. About 1225 the island became a stronghold for Chinese pirates until the latter were driven by the Moros. Surrendered without resistance to Admiral Dewey, May 6, 1898. First occupied by the Americans as a convalescent hospital, November 14, 1904, and first garrison, the 35th Company, C.A.C., commanded by Captain C.E. Kilbourne, arrived, May 8, 1908. Became the seat of the government of the Commonwealth of the Philippines during World War II and the scene of President Quezon’s taking oath of office on his second term. Sunset View

By the checkpoint of Cavite City, the view offers the mountain of Bataan, the island of Corregidor, the outline of Mt. Buntis and, of course at the end of the day, the world famous Manila Bay Sunset.

The following are some photos shared on FB pages occasionally shared by various residents of the city.

For now mahirap ng kumuha ng ganitong larawan because of the reclamation sadly. A road will be built starting before the entrance of the city proper all the way to the proposed airport thus destroying the once calming view of the sunset we the residents once revered.

San Roque Parish Church - Aerial HD View

History
Image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Porta Vaga was first enshrined at this church the time it came during the galleon trade from Mexico. The original photograph of the the saint can be found here at San Roque church and became their patron for more than 300 years. She was known to be "Reina de Cavite" and "La Celestial Guardia de Cavite y Puerto".

According to old stories, Virgin Mary appeared to a Spanish soldier year 1667 at the shores of Canacao near Porta Vaga which is the only entry point to Intramuros or Cavite Puerto. The next day, the photo of Virgin de la Soledad was found and settled at San Pedro Church in the year 1692, April 12 and enshrined at Ermita de Porta Vaga and November 17, 1978, the image was crowned by Nuncio Apostolico of the Philippines. Until now, miracles and devotion for the Holy Virgin were still present.

Muralla : An Evolution

This well lighted bay front offers promenade cool breeze during balmy nights. The view of Bacoor Bay shows the tower of the Aguinaldo Mansion as well as the many oyster beds that dot the bay. This area was once called the isthmus of Rosario and at one time featured a drawbridge.

The Muralla when it is still literally bare decades ago as seen in the side back view of the 13 martyrs monument.

Then it became like this. Good old days when it is peaceful at day.

And so is during night time.

Then not too long half was cemented and elevated.

Not too long again it was expanded then benches and stalls were placed.

The Muralla became a busy place not only at day even at night.

Nowadays nightly it is full of ihaw-ihaw stalls at night wherein family and friends makes tambay and bonding.

Do you think is this good or bad?

Sangley Point

This was used by the Chinese pirate Limahong in 1574 as his refuge when he ran away after a failed attempt to take Manila.

Naval Station Sangley Point was also a communication and hospital facility of the United States Navy which occupied the northern portion of the Cavite City peninsula and is surrounded by Manila Bay, approximately eight miles southwest of Manila, the Philippines. The station was a part of the Cavite Naval Shipyard across the peninsula. The naval station had a runway that was built after World War II, which was used by U.S. Navy P-2 Neptune and P-3 Orion patrol planes. An adjacent seaplane runway, ramp area and seaplane tender berths also supported P5M Marlin patrol planes until that type's retirement from active naval service in the mid-1960s. NAS Sangley Point/NAVSTA Sangley Point was also used extensively during the Vietnam War, primarily for U.S. Navy patrol squadrons forward deployed from the United States on six month rotations. The naval station was turned over to the Philippine government in 1971. It is now operated by the Philippine Air Force and Philippine Navy.

San Roque Church

Built in 18th century.  Gutted by fire in 1901. It has been enlarged and remodeled several times.

Sadly its been almost 20 years that it has been undergoing renovation. The 17th century icon of the Blessed Virgin of Solitude of Porta Vaga is enshrined here.

San Roque Parish Church Altar 2015 (still under renovation)
Photo c/o: Anthony Trias

I miss the old church whose floors should have just been elevated and the altar remodeled rather than destroying the whole structure even without sufficient funds to build a very high structure that is no way suitable in its location. Another thing I can’t understand how come the altar seems to be in the last to be constructed while the convent was the first they finished.

Fort San Felipe

Fort San Felipe is an old structure dating back to 1609, when the Spaniards built it to protect part of the growing city back then. The structure is made of granite blocks, with walls approximately 30 feet high. A wide stairway leads to the top of the port where a concrete house can be found. Naval memorabilia including antique cannons decorate the lawns. It is at present managed by the Philippine Navy. Visits can be arranged with prior coordination with the Philippine Navy Headquarters.

The fort is dedicated to San Felipe Neri in the 16th century. The area used to be a shipping capital of the Philippines during the Spanish rule. The fort was used as a fortress of the Spanish Navy, also called as the Spanish Armada. Many transactions during the Spanish period was done in the area such as trading, stevedoring, and cargo/freight services by the Spanish merchants and shippers.

Galleon Trade is one of the common business trading in the area, from Manila to Acapulco and vice versa. The name changed to reflect the city that the ship was sailing from. The trade route was inaugurated in 1565 with the discovery of the ocean passage by Andrés de Urdaneta, and continued until 1815 when the Mexican War of Independence put a permanent stop to the galleon trade route.

Fort San Felipe Today

No doubt that the site is beautiful. Tourists can sense the history because it is really detectable in the area. Today, Fort San Felipe is a major tourist attraction in the province of Cavite. Inside the fort, a small museum can be seen. It contains memorable materials during the Spanish period, especially the wartime relics like guns, weapons, cannonballs, and shells. Tourists can also feel the refreshing breeze of the ocean.

Cavite National High School formerly "Cavite High School"

Cavite National High School, formerly known as Cavite High School, is a Secondary School located at the City of Cavite, Philippines. It was established in 1902 and it is considered as one of the oldest national secondary schools in the country.

Image c/o Google Plus

The school was established on June 19, 1902 with 25 students mostly from the towns of Cavite, San Roque and Caridad. However, classes could not start because of cholera, the buildings in bad condition, there were no desks, and building was unsanitary because it was used as a pig pen. Then Principal Sydney K. Michelle and Mr. Hammond H. Buck raised 100 pesos for the needed repairs. On July 1, 1902, the school became operational with 30 students. On September 1, it became 61 and in November, it became 80.

In 1903, Cavite High School transferred to an old but spacious disputed government land where a Spanish hospital stands. Student population continued to increase and during the same year, a debating society was organized among the advanced students. Also, in 1904 and in 1905 respectively, a baseball team and a track and field team was established. The Supreme Court however ordered that the land be returned to the Catholic Church. Again, the school had to relocate at P. Gomez st. where the Spanish Provincial Governor used to reside. In 1908, the High School saw its first five graduates, four males and one female. In 1928, the school had to move to Caridad Preparatory before transferring to its present lot, a sprawling 6-hectare lot located donated by Caridad Estate of Cavite, Inc. through Mr. Hammond Buck who was engaged in the Bureau of Education prior to being engaged in real estate.

The 2-2 Plan, the new curriculum, was implemented in 1957 under the then Principal Jose T. Bernal. Back then, Junior and Senior High School students were given the choice whether they preferred vocational, college preparatory or an elective curriculum.[citation needed]
Junior students were often sent to Cavite Naval Operating Base (now Cavite Naval Base) for their on-the-job training. They could choose mechanical repairs, machinery operations, practical electricity, welding, sheetmetal, shipfitter, pipefitter or foundry. Boys underwent woodworking courses which were done in the school shop while girls underwent hair science and dressmaking and design courses in the Home Economics Laboratory.

Republic Act No. 3694 converted Cavite High School into Cavite National High School as approved by President Diosdado Macapagal on June 22, 1963. The budget appropriated for such purpose was P250,000.00. In school year 1973-1974, student population was 5,959 while there were 207 teachers and employees.

The school admits more than 1,500 new freshmen students from elementary schools in the city as well as in neighboring towns. The present student population is almost 7,000 and there are more than 500 in the school's annex, Cavite National High School - Annex (Now Sangley Point National High School).
