Big Ben's Kitchen

Resto Name: Big Ben's Kitchen
Location: Imus, Cavite
Type: Filipino
Average Price Per Dish: P100-P200

Let's start the year with a yummy resto review ....

Few days before 2017 ended, I was finally was able to try this small and cozy resto in Medicion, Imus. Been invited twice months ago by the owner himself but it was only last December 27 that it materialized at last.

This small home resto is located exactly in 385 Medicioan 1st-D Imus, Cavite.
The resto has been operating for 3 years and is located in the renovated ancestral house.  According to the owner Chef Gene Gutierrez, this is the 3rd resto in the area a few years ago - now they are 18.

The Menu

The price range is relatively ranging from P100-P200

This are the foods sampled :)

Calamansi Cucumber Honey - P50
Yummy and refreshing. Perfectly blended.

Pancit LangLang
It is called pancit but it is more like a mami. I heard this dish for quite a while but this is the first time I tasted it. Sotanghon in hot broth that took hours to boil for flavor with cabbages, scrambled egg topped with fried garlic. It was a stomach filling warm old fashion sabaw.

Fiesta Menudo (family) - P218
This is my first time eating a menudo that is tuyo and not masarsa. It is soooo yummy. Every bite reminds you of old typical Pinoy handaan because of the very home cooked bursting flavor. The meat pieces are so soft and perfectly cooked. MUST TRY !!!

Spicy Fish Fillet with Cabbage - P166
Dori is fried in batter then topped with sauteed cabbage and chili flakes. If one is fond if spicy dishes this is worth a try.

Adobong Tinali - P216
This dish is inspired by the cocks of the sabungeros that are talunan sa topada or sabong or cockfight thus the name. But tihs dish is made from chicken in nearby poultry farm in Cavite. Yummy and it is also sold in bottle in the resto.

Fiesta Kare-Kare - P236
One of the best tasting Kare-kare. The peanut is freshly grounded rather than the typical peanut butter of most Kare-kare no being served. The meat they used was cara which was boiled for 8 hours so basically it melts in your mouth. The bagoong completes the Kare-Kare experience.
MUST TRY !!!

D' Famous Longga Meal - P88
The most popular of the resto dish and its specialty of course is the longganisa.   The longganisa is made of lean pork meat and has no preservatives. MUST TRY !!!

Longganisa is best paired with their very own yummy sukang sasa with minced garlic and chopped chillies.

Leche Flan - P128
For dessert, this yummy leche flan made purely from egg yolks. How could I tell? It tasted so much like the recipe we do at home. The leche flan taste and creaminess that I am searching has finally found its match LOL and its has a bonus because this one has macapuno in the middle! YUMMY!!! For its price this leche flan is a steal. MUST TRY !!!

The small cozy homey feel resto.

You can write on the walls - COOL !!!

Big Ben's longganisa recipe came from the grandmother Chef Gene. He made some improvement on it and it is now more popularly known as D'Famous Imus Longganisa.

Pasalubong Corner

See you soon again Big Ben's Kitchen.

Thank you very much Chef Gene Gutierrez for the filling and wonderful afternoon lunch. If ever you go to Imus, misses home cooked dishes and wants to try heirloom recipes this resto is definitely A MUST VISIT.

Baba's Spoon Smoked Mussels Linguine

A few weeks ago got a message on Instagram from Baba's Spoon to try their product. Bottled tuyo and bangus is everywhere but bottled mussels much more smoked mussels - first time hearing about it.

Baba's Spoon Smoked Mussels comes in 200g bottle. It contains pickled fresh mussels in olive oil, garlic, chilli pepper and spices. The mussels are smoked in mango woods that gives that perfect distinct smoky flavor. Once you open the bottle the smell is reminiscent of tinapa. Upon tasting the mussels are bit sour but every bite is bursting with smoky flavor that makes it very yummy plus the hint of spiciness is just perfect.

This is the dish I thought of using it for - Smoked Mussels Linguine

Ingredients:
4 tbsps virgin olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup water
2 pcs tomatoes, chopped
salt and black pepper
1 pound linguine pasta
1 bottle Baba’s Spoon Smoked Mussels

Procedure:
Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until just tender but still firm to the bite, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes.

Heat 2 tablespoons virgin olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and pepper flakes and sauté until light golden, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, tomato sauce and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the sauce is thick and flavors blend, stirring frequently. Add Baba’s Spoon Smoked Mussels. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in pasta and serve immediately.

Baba's Spoon Smoked Mussels is a Cavite product definitely worth a try.
Priced @P200 per bottle it comes in two variety. Regular and spicy.

Kok's Manok

Lutong Cavite received a message from Koko Tamura, one of the two owners a few weeks ago for this product free taste - Kok's Manok.

Store's cute, catchy and well-thought logo

Opened last August 31, 2013, Kok’s Manok is a take-out restaurant that already gained a following in Imus, Cavite just a month after its opening.

The store

Time to see and taste what this latest brand of roasted chicken in Cavite has to offer.

Classic Whole Roast - P 189

The VERDICT: The roast chicken is VERY flavorful even on the inside and stays true to its tagline “So Juicy, So Lambot !” Flavor is well-distributed, and the skin roasted to perfection since it is cooked in a rotisserie. With its taste and texture Kok's Manok will definitely give long established lechon manukan a very stiff competition. It's quality is comparable to Chooks to Go and Kenny Roger's but with a different taste.

Freshly roasted Kok's Manok

Like any traditional lechon manok Kok’s Manok is also served with special sauce and catsup but we wish soon they will also offer gravy plus side dishes like mashed potato, corn and carrots or coleslaw which we bet will surely boost its sales especially Kok's Manok is more high-end in terms of quality.

P69 pesos for a quarter of this yummy chicken with rice is definitely a steal.

So if ever you get a chance to go to Imus don’t forget to visit Kok’s Manok. This would be perfect this yuletide season especially as a holiday treat.

Just add P10 for the Garlic or Spicy Flavor.

This roasted chicken treat is highly recommended and definitely worth a visit and try.
